So Many Omissions
I really like this site but, and I don't mean to be critical or condescending, there are so many names that you haven't included in your database, Mike. I'm not even talking about contrived names or weird spellings of names you already have. Is your site a work in progress or do you want to keep your database small and selective? If you like, I could post some names here or you might want to check out my website. I have lots of names but no meanings, although I know the origins of most of the names. My site is called A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME at http://community.webtv.net/cheryl44/NAMES

I'm sorry if I offended anyone; it wasn't my intention. Yes, Pavlos, I know my site pales in comparison to Kabalarians. I love that site. I have submitted about 200 names to them and they added most of them, but am still waiting for them to add some names such as Abonique for instance. Also, I would like to add that I admire you and Nanaea for your loyalty to Mike & BTN. And Mike, I guess, if you need the meanings of the names, I won't be submitting because I'm not very into name meanings. A name can be lovely and have a very silly or unflattering meaning. And conversely, a name can be awful-sounding and have a very noble or admirable meaning. I had much rather go for the sound of the name. I am rather interested in the origins of names, however. Oh, by the way, my site also pales in comparison to BTN (which I admitted in my original message) and also to Kaeori who has a great names site

Cheryl,
Even if you don't have the meanings to the omitted names you can still post the list names. Then the other patrons of the message board can debate the origins of the obscure ones. And don't worry, I was not mortally offended by your post. ;)Mike

Oh, I forgot to add a comment about my names site. Although, I only have about 10,000 names on my site, I could have many more if I included nicknames and alternate spellings of names. I think this is somewhat of a con. I do include alternate spellings of the same name if they are equally accepted and used (Katherine & Catherine) and nicknames if they are commonly used as names such as Terry, Peggy, Maggie, etc. I have been to some site which have 10 or more spells of the same name and every nickname is included, sometimes even alternative spells of those (Mandy, Mandi, Mandee, Mandie, Mandye) I think a lot of sites do this because they don't have a very extensive database of names. And before anyone gets indignant and writes me a nasty response, I am not talking about BTN, but Kabalarians are famous for this.

Cheryl,
One can only assume that if I am missing so many names from my 8000+ name database which are included in your list of 10000 names, then there are bound to be a few names in my database that are missing from your list. Of course I don't have every name on my site and I never will. And of course it's a work in progress - why else would I ask people to submit missing names? I can't foresee a point in the future at which I'll say to myself, "Well, I guess I'm done now."You are welcome to post your list of omissions here, as long as none of the names begin with J, K, or L (the letters which I am in the process of updating).

Hi, Cheryl! Yep, this is an on-going project of Mike's, begun in 1996 when it was the first site of its kind on the 'net. :)One reason why you may have noticed a number of "omissions" is because Mike carefully researches each name before putting it on the website. Mike not only consults printed and online reference sources, he also asks others with expertise in particular areas to give him input on each entry. The meanings of the names which you do see on this site, can be trusted for their accuracy. It's not the quantity which matters so much here, as the quality. :)If you'd like to submit some names to Mike, Mike generally asks that you e-mail your submissions to mike-AT-behindthename.comBe sure to put all submissions with their meanings into the same format which you see Mike using for his database. I'm sure Mike will give them his consideration. :)-- Nanaea

Maybe you could provide Mike C a list of any *important* omissions (names and etymologies) not included in BtN.
Your site is nice, although -- and I wish not to be critical or condescending -- it pales in comparison to the completeness of www.kabalarians.com.

Strange, see my posting on Iden, his wife's name was Rose, and my dad had another name for her!
Cheers
