A dim and distant memory suggests Golden Mouth, in other words, excellent public speaker. There was a Saint Somebody Chrystostom I think, but don't ask me what he was famous for.

I think, you are perfectly right. John Chrysostom(us) was a 4th century saint from Syria, archbishop of Constantinople. He was famous for his excellent sermons and soon after his death was given the name Chrysostom ("Golden Mouth" as you are saying). Andy ;—)
