meaning of my name

I would like to know the meaning of my name. It's Shalene (female) I am told that it means elegance in Hindi but that it was originally picked out of a book of swahili names but I don't know the meaning in swahili.

In South Africa it's a variant of Charlene, which is a variant of Charlotte. It's also sometimes spelt: Shaleen. If it exists in Swahili, then either they also use it as a fem form of Charles, which is unlikely, or they've picked up on it from (much) further South, or it's a coincidence. I'm betting on the coincidence!

It could be a variation of Sharlene, a feminine form of Charles (follow hyperlinks for details).It would help if you told us what country you live in and what your ethnic background is.:-)
