Half a year after Mal and Eira married, Obsidian vanished from the streets. At first, the public didn't notice, but after a month, the underworld did, and crime rates began to climb in the areas the mysterious vigilante previously prowled. Soon, it started to make the news, and Eira began to worry. The truth is, she simply couldn't return to her beat even if she wanted to, as she was pregnant enough to show, and it would be too large a risk, both for her and for the baby, to get back to the streets.
Fortunately, Mal figured out a way to settle things down. At first, Eira suggested that he use his powers to make illusions of her stalking the area, but he dismissed it as too impractical. Instead, he did what his Paradox cover did best: tighten his "criminal empire" around the area, quickly curbing the current occupants and driving them out, supposedly laying claim to the region as his own. And with Paradox's reputation as a vengeful trickster with an unpredictable temper, none of the common criminals dared defy his takeover.
Well, there was that time the superheroine Glacia came and wrenched one of Paradox's warehouses over to the police, but Glacia - or Scarlett Liu - was an old friend of Eira's, and the attack had been pre-arranged to coincide with the arrival of a mob boss at the warehouse. The newspaper lauded Glacia for her move, and Eira felt better now that she knew her turf was taken care of.
That December, on Christmas morning, Eira gave birth to their first child. Evey was named after Scarlett, in part. She had Mal's black hair and pale eyes, although Mal himself thinks that everything else about her looks like Eira.
