It's about to get complicated - keep up. Meet "Dan" and "Kel", a thoroughly modern couple living in Budapest, Hungary. Dan was born in Gibraltar to two mums of English heritage using a Spanish sperm donor to conceive; he has straight, brown hair and hazel eyes. Kel was born in Norway with wavy, blonde hair and green eyes, her parents brought her [and her nine siblings!] up in the Norwegian countryside but Kel rejected her hippy upbringing and moved to Hungary working as a hydropower engineer. Dan was holidaying in Hungary on a writer's retreat when he met Kel, fell in love and decided to move there permanently. His career as a Young Adult author is going well.
Yr1: The Martins get an aquarium starting with four fish: Marcell, Lili, Luca and Bence. Additionally, Kel finds herself forced to enrol at a Hungarian college as one of her Norwegian qualifications is proved void.
Yr2: The Martins adopt fraternal twin boys from Nigeria. Lekan and Lanre are 9 months old, Dan and Kel decide to give the babies international middle names on their adoption certificates; welcome Lekan Alex Martin with wavy black hair and brown eyes & Lanre Erik Martin with curly, dark brown hair and brown eyes.
Yr3: Dan is hit financially when a stock he'd invested in in Gibraltar loses money. Kel is not very happy at all but the family manage. The situation isn't helped when Dan travels to Moldova to volunteer at some teaching centres leaving Kel to hold the fort with a full time job and twin toddlers.
Yr4: The Martins become the proud owner of Kamilla the goat - a gift from a fan of Dan's books.
Yr5: The family (minus Kamilla) holiday in Gibraltar to visit Dan's mums for a couple of weeks.
Yr6: The twins are old enough to start begging for a dog and it doesn't take long for Dan and Kel to buckle. Welcome Hunor the Vizsla-cross.
Yr7: Money troubles arise again when Kel burns herself at work causing an expensive hospital stay requiring a skin graph on her arms and stomach. But the family is lifted again when Dan is headhunted by a popular editor sending his book sales and returns through the roof.
Yr8: Good news keeps coming as Kel finally gets that pay rise she's been deserving... Just in time too as the family grows by two with the birth of fraternal twin boys! The Martins struggle to find names for their boys that work in Gibraltar (English and Spanish), Norwegian and Hungarian but in the end they have sons, Sebastian Péter Martin with straight, brown hair and green eyes and Isak Benett Martin with straight, blonde hair and brown eyes.
Yr9: Dan receives a literally award for his novels in the YA category. Also this year, Kel has the little girl she's been yearning for in the form of 3 year old, Nigerian orphan Kayin who has curly, black hair and brown eyes. As with Lekan and Lanre, Kel and Dan give the girl a Hungarian middle name, welcome to the family: Kayin Léna Martin.
Yr10: A stray cat becomes the latest member of the Martin household after taking a shine to Kayin - who names her Zorka. The family pack up and holiday in Panama.
Dan (31) and Kel (34) with: Lekan & Lanre (9), Kay (4), Seb & Isak (2); plus Kamilla (7), Hunor (5) and Zorka (9mo).
