The second-most popular name...
Someone on haggisbutt put it on her list of extremely rare names for a woman who wants her son to never encounter another kid with his name. I told her, I've met a Demetrius in my life.Andrea

Demetrius -- or Dimitris in common parlance -- is today definitely one of the 3 most popular male names in Greece, the others being George (Yorgos) and John (Iannis)!

Stupid question for our beloved Hellenic regular...Is the name "Yanni" a variation of Iannis? I have an aquaintance who is very much a fan of the Greek New Age musician, and I can't encounter her without seeing one or more of his CDs in her backpack (personally, I'm not exactly thrilled with him).Phyllis (aka Sidhe Uaine or Gaia Euphoria)

THere are no stupid questions, just stupid answers...The Greek form of John is Ioannis, and nicknames inclide Iannis, Tannis, Yannos etc.Personally, I rank Ianni's music a close second to Muzak. Music even unfit for the boudoir of a Piraeus brothel. Gheorghe Zamfir's pan flutes *rock* compared to Ianni's mass-produced aural excrementia.
