Behind the designer of the Mini Cooper
One of my all-time favorite British cars is the legendary Mini. Originally designed by Sir Alec Isigonis, an English-Greek in 1956, the Mini is now being revamped and re-released (controversially, by BMW). Although the car never quite made it in the US, in Europe it was every bit at revolutionary as the Ford model T or the VW Beetle. For more info on the Mini, check out http://www.miniusa.com.
Now about what's behind Sir Alec Isigonis: the name Isogonis is derived from "Isis" and "gone" (Greek, meaning "child/descendant"), hence the name means "child of Isis". Related names include the femate version Isigeneia, as well as Isidore(M/F), Isidora(F), Isidotos(M)/Isidote(F) ("given to Isis"), Isicrates(M)/Isicrate (F) ("he who holds Isis"), Isitychos(M) ("luck of Isis" -- from "tyche"), Isidike (F) (justice of Isis - from "dike")Isiphilos(M) ("friend of Isis")-- I wouldnt recomment the latter for a child, for the name sounds like syphilis.

Hey, do you remember that TV show, "Isis"? I'd forgotten all about it 'till now. Wasn't she a superhero?:)

I LOVED that show. That show and "Shazam".I remember Isis, though. I remember when she turned into Isis, she put her palms out to her side and said "Oh Mighty Isis (echo), Isis(echo), Isis (echo). I also remember that she had some sort of ancient jewel on her forehead and when it is placed into the sun, the enemy better watch out.I recently watched the movie "Bring It On" and one of the cheerleaders name was Isis (Ice for short). I couldn't believe it!

i thought isis was a goddess.

Yeah, I remember it and no, she wasn't technically a superheroine. It was loosly based on the idea that the goddess Isis would willingly completely possess somebody at the command of that particular somebody (who just happened to possess the "amulet") without going through an exhaustive ritual. It was tacked onto the Captain Marvel (sp?) tv show to make the "Hour of Power (if i remember correctly) and there were a couple of times they (the writers) merged the two shows together. :shrug:Phyllis (aka Sidhe Uaine or Gaia Euphoria)

I think the mini is a cute car, but I don't think I'd want one myself, they're a bit too small. Have you seen "The Italian Job" with Michael Caine? Lots of minis, crazy stunts and one huge traffic jam! Well I think it's a good film anyway!

I remember seeing Minis tootling along the streets of London, and they always cracked me up. No, Minis wouldn't quite catch on in the States, where everyone drives BIG cars -- with vans, "sports utility vehicles", and trucks now having replaced the T-birds of yesteryear. What is it with all these trucks, anyhow? Two college students (both girls) who work for me have gotten trucks of their own, and the high school kids who work for me are all talking about getting a "stretch truck" instead of a stretch limo for their high school prom.Do you have this truck craze in Greece, as well?-- Nanaea

Yikes no, and I hope it wont catch on. But we do have a rather obnoxious craze with 4x4s: scores of nouveau-riche anal appendages roam the narrow streets of Athens with their Grand Cherokees and Land Rovers.
