Interesting findings on Mara
While researching for my sophomore project, I discovered that there is a Hindu/Buddhist personification of evil - Mara. And you thought that name was innocent. >:^)According to one book, "Mara," means "death or thirst" or something of that ilk as well as the relatively harmless "bitter". I'm not sure how much I trust the source - has anyone else heard of this meaning?

I think god Mara was the one who tried to stop Buddha from reaching nirvana. Mara was tempting Buddha with images of "wordly" things while Buddha was meditating under his holy tree.
In Dalmatia (Croatia) Mara is a female name and is a variation of Mary. What is more the croatian waord for ladybug or ladybird is buba mara (buba=bug), so the exact translation of it would be Mary`s bug. Actually my great-grandmother`s name was Mara and she was a very nice lady :-)

heheMara's a pretty name. Yeah, that's what I heard about the god Mara - speaking of Nirvana, that's a nice name, though I guess the connotations are a bit unsettling. Mary's bug is a cute meaning. :)

-confused-How is paradise unsettling?
Instead maybe Valhalla, Elysian, Elysium, Bliss, Heaven, Arcadia, Eden, or even Paradise.
Names that mean paradise:FARDOOS (f) "paradise" (Arabic)
JINAN (m,f) "garden" or "paradise" (Arabic)
FIRDOS (m) Indian name meaning "paradise" from Arabic firdaws. My theasaurus also lists 'El Dorado' as a place of paradise, i wouldn't adivise naming a child that :)~SilverPs. I think Valhalla is nice.

Er -By connotations, I meant the band, whose lead singer committed suicide. The meaning itself is nice. :) Though I think it's "enlightenment" more than "paradise," but close enough.

The Khazar tribes had Marena - a goddess of evil and death. I have read somewhere that that's how the name Marina evolved - meaning "evil, don't take her". I don't know how reliable this is though

HmInteresting. Marena sounds like Morana, which, according to this site, is a Slavic goddess of death. :) Interesting.
