Liam is indeed an Irish variant/derivation of William, so legitimately someone named Liam could be said to be paying homage to a relative named William. Please use the name if you like it.I don't know the degree to which "William" proper is used in Ireland, but I would guess that many Irish Catholics, at least in the northern counties (Ulster), would avoid "William" due to its implied connections to the Protestant William of Orange, who won the 1690 Battle of the Boyne which the Ulster Loyalists can't let lie.- Da.
