HER-ee IS "hairy"
If you study the pronunciation key carefully, you'll see that Mike spells the "AIR" sound as ER.E is as in "bet" or "care". Now, carefully say "bet", drawing out the short E sound. Now, replace the T with and a R. You'll get "bare"/"bear".I admit it's a little confusing--it confused me at first, until I sounded out the example words carefully and got it--but I think ER looks neater than writing AIR.
