Hi Lissa,

Lamar could be a form of the Old High German name Landmar, which means "land" + "famous". Or maybe it has got something to do with French "la mer" (the ocean)???

You are correct, sir. Lamar means "of the sea," according to page 166 of “The Dictionary of First Names,” by Alfred J. Kolatch, c 1980.
