Ames
Ames is a very uncommon name that I have a strong affinity for. I can rarely find it in baby name books. I had a friend named Ames in school. Ames is a male name of French origin meaning "friend". I trying to look more at the usage and to see if it is more common outside the US.

The boy's name Ames is pronounced aymz. It is of French origin, and its meaning is "friend". The name may be related to the Latin word for love, "amor", or may have referred to those who lived near elm trees, or may be a variant of Amos (Hebrew) "borne by God".
Ames is a very rare male first name and a very popular surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census).www.thinkbabynames.com

I suspect that Ames is a derivitive of the latin amici meaning friend.

This might be a silly suggestion. But I have a friend called Ames. Her real name is Amy. Maybe your friend at school was called Ames for short? Amy means friend too.
