Vimla Patel, Babies' Names from the Indian Subcontinent, lists the name Mahati (f) 'great'. I think this is the name's Sanskrit form.

Mahathi is the name of the Veena (the indian string instrument) which was beleived to be played by Lord. naradha. It can be referred par to excellence in music. bye

I think the meaning of "mahathi" is great. Also there is a raaga in carnatic music with that name. And I dunno if this is rite but then its believed that the name of the veena that narada holds also is the same.
