Hi Don,Tauno is a name from Karjala (Karelia) in East Finland. It's from the Karelian adjective "tauno" which means "modest, discreet, good-natured".Sometimes it is used as a Finnish variant of the Latin name Augustinus as well........Uno is more often written Uuno in Finland and it comes from the Latin name/word Uno which means "one".Terveisin,
Satu

Päivää, Satu!Do you know if there are big differences between Finnish and Karelian? Are there any typical Karelian first names, or do the Finnish Karelians use Finnish names and the Russian Karelians Russian names?

Gomorron Caprice!Hejsan!Finnish and Karelian are very close, many words are the same and I'd say it's more like a Finnish dialect.
I don't know anything about names in Karelia, the Karelians I know (only 6!) have got Finnish names. And I don't know any Russian Karelians at all... jag är ledsen! ;)Satu
