Sparta
I've heard of Sparta used as a name for a girl and wondered what the meaning was.

First of all Sparta is a town.According to G.BABINIOTIS Sparta may came from the word sparton(which means rope in ancient grec)

It's odd that somebody would name a girl after the city though, when it was famous for being the opposite of comfortable, cultured Athens - ascetic and dog-eat-dog (or so I remember from doing 'the Greeks' in primary school!) - hence the adjective 'spartan'. I suppose that might appeal to some people, though.I wonder whether the choice of name for this girl was inspired by Spartacus instead? That's quite a heartwarming story, all the slaves standing up and saying "I am Spartacus" so nobody would know who to punish? Just a thought.

Thanks. I knew it was a town and thought it a little odd to be a name for a girl. That made me curious as to the meaning.
