Italian pronunciation of Caterina
My sister-in-law, Karen, has a sister named Kathryn. I've heard Karen mention several times how cute it is that Kathryn's Italian-born fiance calls her Katrina. I mentioned once to Karen that I suspect he's calling her Caterina yet she's pretty adamant that she hears Gino say 'Katrina.'My questions are: (1) how is Caterina pronounced in Italian, and (2) could he possibly be calling her another form of Caterina (perhaps Catrina)?TIA.ETA that I had always assumed that Caterina is pronounced cah-tah-REE-nah.

It should be kah-teh-REE-nah (by teh I mean like the e in the word let and not like tay). He may just be trying to Italianize the name Kathryn (as opposed to Catherine/Katherine) and choosing to call her Catrina.
