In Sanskrit, ku means the earth and nAD.a/nAla means a species of reed, and kunAla is the term used for the portion of the stalk of a lotus flower that is underground.However, the meaning of the word attested in Sanskrit literature derives from the root kuN (to make a sound, may be related to Latin cuno, or from the old root kU with cognates in Greek), and it is the name of an Himalayan bird which is said to have beautiful eyes.In any case, it is attested as a name for more than 2000 years, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunala for a legend.
