a question about the name shun
hey everyone,
it's me again. i have a question about the gender for the japanese name ''SHUN'' on this site it says the japanese origin of the name is feminine. but i think it's more of a boy's name or maybe a unisex name. if you look up shun on google your must get guys with that name and most anime characters name shun are guys. i try finding the gender for the name on some baby names book in my local book store i couldn't find it.
thank you for your time.

Just as in the U.S., many names in Japan can be unisex. A girl named Shun doesn't sound out of the realm of possibility, but it's definitely mainly a male name.

thanks clauidaSthanks claudiaS,
i went to a local book store and try to look the name shun in baby names. i couldn't find it. since i was kind of a hurry. but i did find shion which says it's a girls name. but on wikepdia it says it's a unisex name. but there is both male and female fictional characters with that name. but i don't know any female fictional characters with the name shun. that's why i was wounding. i hated to ask this again but is shun a popular name in japan? because i think the girl i met at hibachi master just said her name was a popular japanese name. nothing about it being a popular girls name.

Yes, Shun is a comparatively popular boy's name. I saw it at #33 on one list for 2007 and #46 on another.

The two websites I've found are in Japanese only. Links are: http://www.meijiyasuda.co.jp/profile/etc/ranking/
http://women.benesse.ne.jp/event/hakase/rank2007/index.htmlI looked over the newly posted 2008 top 100 list for names which appear for both boys and girls and found these: Sora (#5 for boys, #55 for girls)
Hinata (#20 boys, #22 girls)
Yuu (#21 boys, #56 girls)
Aoi (#42 boys, #3 girls)
Shion (#56 boys, #97 girls)
Mizuki (#70 boys, #56 girls)

No, I don't know any English sites that have this kind of current information about popular Japanese names. Sorry!

I can read Japanese, so I haven't used an online translator. If you send me your e-mail I'd be happy to type you out a list of the most popular names from 2008 (the list goes to 100).
