Maru in Japanese
in reply to a message by Megan
The Japanese vocabulary word Maru means "circle," not "ship." It is traditionally used as a suffix for names of ships, but the reasoning behind this is not clear (there are several theories, try googling "Japanese ship naming conventions"). It is pronounced mah-roo with equal stress on each syllable.
