El Shaddai
My daughter's name is El Shaddai. It is spelled as I wrote it. I'm looking for info on it. Amy Grant sings the song and I know it may mean God, but I would like to find more info.
Thanx

The problem with translating Shaddai as almighty is that Shaddai is a plural. It seems that the original meaning was many-breasted. 'The Hebrew word shaddai comes from the root word 'breast'. Literally translated it would mean 'many-breasted one'. See http://www.goodnewsinc.net/v4gn/shaddai.html for details. References to women and female anatomy in the Bible are often obscured by later 'reinterpretation'. Perhaps this is another example.

People are cruel out in this world. I knew it ment God Almighty. I'm not stupid. There are other names that are of Gods. I'm sorry you feel the way you do, but as it was said its a bit to late to change. Her nick name is ElSha for your info. She is a bright Young lady and if you only knew what happened for me to name her, you wouldn't be so harsh. Thank You for your input. There are other Godly names in these names, too. Are you as hypercritical of them?

Yeah, you're totally right. El Shaddai is a really awesome name and I just want you to know that I am backing you up in your decision to name your daughter this!! I am glad you have no regrets about naming her that - it is an excellent name, and it sounds like it is perfect for her. I had never heard of naming a kid El Shaddai before, but I absolutely love it. It is great.People are incredbily cruel and degrading around here. I've learned that the hard way. People hate me and my names, too. But some people need to learn how to give their opinion without insulting, hurting, and making others feel bad. I almost stopped making polls after some rude comments I got about my names.Don't worry about them. And don't ever regret naming your daughter the name you WANTED to name her. There is no need to. The people who are saying these things just need to grow up. I know I'm going to get chewed out for this, but I honestly think you guys need to cool it a little. Everyone gets way too wored up about things.Éowyn

I feel exactly like you do. In fact I can't stop thinking about this name! And for all the people who 'know' so much about its meaning, here's another theory:(see my first post) From a chapter titled WHY HAS MAINSTREAM CHRISTIANITY IGNORED THE DIVINE FEMININE on http//www.cosmicwind.net/800/Cmwl/WynnProse/EvanQ2.html : '... El Shaddai, () is more accurately translated "the breasted God" or "God with breasts" which would evoke an androgynous image'. And if you think that the orthodox interpretation God Almighty simply 'must' be correct, remember the proverb 'Out of all his creatures, God fears most for the Rabbis' (i.e. for their salvation!) :D

Thanks for your response. I just seen my daughter was on here. I guess my daughter was upset over the rude comments, but she held her own. Again thank you.

you're welcome. no one should be ridiculed and mocked the way you were. it was very uncalled for. you asked a simple question and everyone blew up at you as if you'd named your kid satan or something!! gosh!!

My dear, good woman, if you knew what this remarkably hubristic name meant, why ask us in the first place?Your choice of nickname is a wise one. Try spelling it Elsje - it's pronounced the same, and as a Dutch version of Elsie it's even respectable.

Well how stupid are you? after 15 years and because you and a couple other people are assholes I should change the spelling of her name? El Shaddai is not respectable? You people are rude and I'm working on in our town this so called fun page will not be viewed by any of our children or Our community. We are very proud of our Father. Why would we let our children read the terrible things you wrote about their loved one.

I don't see why this is 'hubristic'. It's honorific. If I want to name my child after the God that I feel created all in the world, how in heavens is that conceited? It's humble to me...Just my 2 cents.I like her name. It's not like you named her Perfection or Delicious.Peace to you and your family!-Mina

Don't you think you're asking this question rather late in the process? Perhaps if you knew what you were letting your daughter in for, you might have had second thoughts?I certainly hope she's got a calm, quiet, modest middle name like Jane or Susan.

No! Her name is the most perfect name for her. It fits her so well. I never had second thoughts. They even told me I was carring a boy and the would of been the same. She loves Heavy metal music, skate boarding, concerts, ridding motor cycles and her favorite bikers are the El Shaddai riders. Did you know there is a florest El Shaddai. Quick you better get on the band wagon to tell them how bad they are. Hurry what are you waiting for?

El Shaddai means 'God Almighty'...a nice name for a deity but a bit much to live up to for a mortal girl child ;o)Shaddai is the plural of Shad from the word shaddad meaning 'to be strong or powerful'. In the Hebrew of the Bible Shaddai occurs no less than 48 times and in every single case refers to God himself and is rendered 'almighty' in translation. Assuming a bit of Christian faith on the part of anyone listening to Amy Grant, if it were me I'd probably neutralise the cheek of applying El Shaddai to a child by dropping the El bit (which means 'God') and working with Shaddad - Shadda maybe, 'to be strong'. But then I personally wouldn't name my child Jehovah, Elohim or Yahweh either. Or name them a foreign term the meaning of which I didn't know or understand because it was in a pretty song come to think of it ;o)Devon

Adonijh, Elihu, Alvah, and get this Yahweh means a lot of things. Please don't be rude about this name. After all it means God Almighty and who are you to Judge? I hope the mother of this young Lady knows that name is the most perfect name ever!

1. There is no 'most perfect name ever'...perhaps a dip in theology classes would expose you to the inherent imperfection of the worldly realm.2. Judge is only capitalised when it starts a sentence or is part of a title as in Judge John D. Caplan presiding, not when you're trying to be emphatic in print.3. Who am I to judge? Well, the person who told her what her daughter's name actually means for a start. And anyway, I'm not judging her (although my gut instinct on this one is that brightness and intellectual curiousity aren't major factors) or her intentions in using the name, simply cluing her in to the controversial and loaded meanings and associations of the name and suggesting ways around that. You shouldn't ask questions if you can't handle honest answers and if you're going to judge someone as judgemental than you can't criticise them for judging someone's common sense to be slightly lacking - setting in judgement of someone for judging is called hypocrisy. They often cover that in religion also ;o)cheersDevon

My name is El Shaddai, I couldn't understand why my mom was crying the other night on the computer. I've been reading the words you have written degrading my mother, insulting her integrity, plus insulting a name you have no idea about. You only know what is written. My Father at a Catholic church hasn't even been so rude at you people here. I'm devistated about how you think you know my mom! I have a letter from Amy Grant that sings the song what it meant. Mom wanted to find out other meanings. Like duh you may have been the one who needs more training on this matter before you put your two food stamps in! My mother has an excelent degree, and makes more money then you will ever make your whole life. I didn't know this was "Behind the name with insults"
