origin of 'Siona'
Hi I am trying to find the roots of the name- "Siona". I did a search
on the Web and it seems to have either Gaelic or American Indian roots
but the information was not conclusive. Besides, the meanings are
also varying. At one site it said Siona means 'graceful'. At another
site it said Siona means 'the stars'. In Gaelic it inferred it
as 'a warning'.
I even tried sending mail to a lady artist named Siona but she has
not replied back.
Could anyone help?! Thanks!

Dear ConfusedI would guess that someone decided that s + i makes sh, and that Siona is Shona in disguise, which makes it a form of Seonaid, which is Gaelic for Janet . I don't understand anyone who says that a name is American Indian - there were so many tribes, so many languages, unless they can be more precise I'd write them off, frankly. Once I knew a Jewish girl called Ziona, and Zion is sometimes spelt Sion - could be that?

Here are some links on references to 'Siona'.South America: http://www.glenn.morton.btinternet.co.uk/babel.htmSiona Indians:
Langdon E. J. (1992). Dau: Shamanic power in Siona religion and medicine. E. J. Langdon and G. Baer (eds.). In: Portals of Power. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press.
FYI,
Both responses (yours and Pavlov) are right then. I found a site
which had explained Siona as 'graceful'. Janet i.e. Jane means 'grace'
so the site was not too off.
Also Siona is 'warning' in Old Irish.I am including some links to provide some more background for any
other possible meanings of 'Siona'. Thanks!
