It varies. Where I live (West Coast), Kari is pronounced like Carrie. In certain other areas, I would expect it to be said with the vowel of "cat." This is purely a dialectal difference. If directly borrowed from a Scandinavian language, it would probably have the vowel of "father."

Ha..perhaps I should have said that in my dialect, Kari sounds like Kerry. It also sounds like Carrie. They're all the same, with an AIR- sound. "A as in cat" does not exist before R in my dialect.
This is a good example of why it's so tricky to even discuss pronunciation without recourse to the IPA.
