Family name
I'm looking for some thoughts on a family last name that turned into a first name at one point. The name is Maitland. I have a few questions for you guys:- what are your thoughts of this name on a boy? A girl?
- first name vs. middle name?
- potential nicknames for either gender?
- considering it is a sentimental family name, would you try working this in somehow? Thanks!

I prefer it as a masculine name even though it's close to Caitlin / Kaitlyn / etc. I think it's better as a middle name. As a first name, it may be confused with Mason, Caitlin, or other similar popular names. For a girl, I like the nickname May / Mae. Mait sounds more masculine. It reminds me of the word "mate", though. I don't think I would use it. Lan and Lanny / Lannie are some other nickname ideas.

I would think boy.Middle, for sure.Mait (boy), Lanny (either), Mai (girl), Landy (either), M (either)Yes, if it was important enough. It's totally fine in the middle.

I think it would be fine as a middle name for either, since there is context to using it, but I wouldn't use it as a first name, just because I don't like the sound that much. I can't really think of any decent nicknames - all I can come up with is Maity (like mate-y) or Lanny, neither of which sounds very good! If I felt really sentimental about a family name, I think I would try very hard to work it into the combo. But I'm pretty big on the idea of using a first name that I really like the sound of, and then honouring in the middle name spot, personally.

Boy was my first reaction
Prefer middle name but either is OK
boy nn, Mate
girl nn, May or Mai
If you like it and want it, use it. If you are forcing yourself to use it, don't, unless it is extremely important to your sig.other.

I think I like it more for a boy than a girl but that being said the only nickname I can think of is Mai (prn. May) and that sounds very feminine.
Overall I would go with middle name but it wouldn't be crazy as a first name.

- I would imagine this on a boy more than on a girl. It feels masculine, and a boy would be able to perpetuate the name further than a girl. I think I've heard of it being used on a girl, but it definitely feels more masculine to me.- I would use this as a middle name. - I'm at a complete loss for nns- If it really means a lot to you, I would definitely work it in somehow
