Does anyone know a reliable source for Native American names?
I know BtN has some, but they're very few - I'm looking for names from all tribes, particularly Choctaw and, of course, from reliable sources. :)Help is appreciated, thanks.

Unfortunately the best I can do is refer you to the following site which tells you about some of the more egregious errors in this field:http://www.native-languages.org/wrongnames.htmThe author of the site suggests that the best thing to do if one wants to find real Native American or Amerindian names is to consult a work by a linguist or anthropologist on a individual tribe or nation. For the Choctaw language in particular, you could try to get some books on the language and/or culture of the Choctaws through Interlibrary loan and see if they have any information about names. Perhaps one to start with would be Choctaw Language and Culture by Marcia Haag & Henry Willis, University of Oklahoma Press, 2001, ISBN 0806133392.

Honestly, I think BtN is going to be your most reliable source, seeing as this site is very well researched, and a lot of Internet sites cannot be trusted. One solution is that a lot of Native Americans names (at least that I've heard of), wen translated into common English are simple, like Standing Bear, or Blue Elk. With a bit of research, you can look into the specific tribal languages and translate them yourself. This may work, depending on what you'll be using this information for.
