The Australian R thing has been around for a while, I think. As an American looking at names like Casarndra, I want to pronounce that R and it sounds terrible. An Australian would pronounce "ar" as "ah," though... so people apparently add the R to ensure that the name is pronounced with that sound and not a short A.
So, Casarndra would be ca-SAHN-dra and not ca-SAN-dra. (I'd pronounce Cassandra that way in the first place, but that's beside the point).
