If you want to go by Kat, Kate, or Katie you could easily do that. I know many people who go by their mn or a nn derived from their mn.
The easiest time to make the change is just as you are starting something new like going to high school, going to college, or starting a new job and anytime you meet new people. But you probably won't be able to convince your family or old friends to call you anything but Mara.
If I didn't love my first name so much I totally would have went by Mari or Mara or Avi. My middle name is Avila, I love it except people often think I'm saying ovula when I say it, I think it's so weird that ovula is people's first thought. The people who don't think I say ovula its because they are familiar with Avila.
Also I wanted to add that I love your name, Mara is beautiful and I really like Katherine and I also love the Katherine nn's Kat, Kate, and Katie.
