Damian
I have always loved this name. I have, however, heard and read various accounts (this site included) both online and with people face to face, that it is associated in some way with the devil. I have found no biblical accounts as such. Is anyone aware of the true meaning of this name? Does it really have anything to do with the devil, and where/when/why did this association originate?

Thanks for the responses - Very helpful. Obviously it helps to know alternate languages (or at least done a bit of research on the Greek words listed on this site); actually I'm embarrassed. "Oh joy... another remake. I didn't know they were making that. How dare they continue to ruin such a lovely name, LOL." Marija, I couldn't agree more. :o/

The names DAMON and DAMIAN have been (obvously by mistake) associated with the Greek word "daimon". This can mean "spirit of the dead", "a god who affects the fate of a person", "fate" (positive or negative). The word "demon" derives from "daimon", so this is probably the reason, why DAMIAN is sometimes associated with the devil.
In the New Testament the word "daimon" appears only once (Matthew 8,31) and there it means "demon" indeed. The usual word for "demon" is "daimonion", which is of course related.

I have found no etymological relationship to "devil" for which the Greek word is "diabolos." The Greek word "daimon" means "demons" and does look similar to Damian, but it is not where the name stemmed from. As this site states under the name Damian, it comes from the Greek name Damianos which was derived from the Greek word "damao" (to tame).
As for the association you speak of, I can only imagine it was derived from the movie/novel "The Omen" in which the son of Satan is named Damien Thorn.

Click for the meaning here: DamianThere is no actual association with the devil. Many people only associate the name with the evil child in the movie The Omen. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Yes, and with it's recent remake being released soon (6.6.06, in their funny way), it'll be associated with the demon child for quite a while longer, unfortunately. And Liz Hurley's kid. Same difference though. lol
