my name
I know that my parents named me after one of President Nixon's daughter's middle name, however, I am been unlucky in finding out the meaning/origin of the name. I have always been told that it is Russian...Is this correct? (My name is Desha - pronounced with a "short e").Sincerely,Desha Tanner

I cannot agree entirely with Menke. Please see Modest in this database. It is explained there that Desha (Desja) can be a pet female name coming from Modest.I could also suppose that Desha is a pet name for Nadezhda. (Also see the link, please.)I think that in Russian, Desha could actually be a pet name for any female name having a stressed -De- in it.

http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/d.htmlfollow this link, it is an etymologically good site and the name Desha is asked here as a fullname, not a pet form.

To MenkeHi,I followed the link and found some confusion there: the terms Russian and Slavic are mixed up. The source marked there as [Mor] actually refers to Slavic name, e.g.If we mean Russian names, then Desha is a pet name for NADEZHDA, most probably. If we mean Slavic (e.g. South Slavic, e.g. Bulgarian or Serbian) names, then Desha or Desa can be also an abbriviation of DESISLAVA possibly meaning "ten times glorious".
