Arwen and Eowyn

Is it possible that Arwen is a real Welsh name? I've seen Arwyn listed as a male Welsh name meaning "muse", and Arwen would be the feminine version, right? Does it have any other meanings? Does Eowyn mean anything in Anglo-Saxon or Welsh? I'm only curious. Thanks for your help!

Hi there,yes, Arwen is indeed a real Welsh name. It means muse. Maybe Tolkien didn't know that name already existed when he used it or he knew it anyway, we'll never know. My sister is called Arwen and when my parents chose the name they didn't even know about the LOTR character Arwen. My sis is very happy to have that name and she loves the LOTR.Cwtch,

Regarding Eowyn, did you look in the database entry? The information you're looking for is there already.

AARGH! I didn't really look at the database. I assumed that the only definition goven would be Tolkein's, like with Arwen. I guess I should've looked closer. Sorry! :)

The endings -wen (female) and -wyn (male) mean "fair; white" or "blessed". I don't know about "ar" or "eo", though, sorry! REGINA SPEKTOR ROCKS!

that makes no sense both names are for females in LOTR. where did you get this info?
