Even though Caroline is a feminine form Carolus, it doesn't mean that 'man' automatically becomes 'woman', but Carolus can mean 'free man (one who didn't belong to nobility)' according to my name book (source: Spectrum voornamen boek)

In this day and age, why not just think of it as: free person? Although the point is a good one - what we think of as a free person is not the highly technical meaning that medieval people would have thought of.
