Another meaning of Caroline

I have always thought that the name Caroline means "free woman" as it derives from Carolus that means "free man", but on this site it says that it only means man. Anyone else that has heard that it could mean free man/free woman?

Even though Caroline is a feminine form Carolus, it doesn't mean that 'man' automatically becomes 'woman', but Carolus can mean 'free man (one who didn't belong to nobility)' according to my name book (source: Spectrum voornamen boek)

In this day and age, why not just think of it as: free person? Although the point is a good one - what we think of as a free person is not the highly technical meaning that medieval people would have thought of.
