Yes, but ... ... I think Summer_Katherine's right; it's a nickname rather than a derivation. She knows a Meredith; I was at school with a Marjorie-Anne whom the teachers called Marjorie but to everyone else she was Muffie. And that, her sisters said, was a first attempt at saying it by her elder brother!

Of course, it it's a nickname, it can be of any other name starting with an M (or not even that).Andy ;—)
