Re: Somerset
in reply to a message by Seda*
There is excellent cider that goes by the name Somerset, and it comes from the area in the south west of England. There are varoius place-names in Britain, their names are explained as "(District of) settlers around Somerton". Somerton again originally was a "farmstead used in summer", except Somerton, Suffolk, which used to be "a farmstead of a man called Sumarlithi" (an Old Scandinavian name). All of this is taken from the Oxford Dictionary of Place-names (1998).Andy ;—)
