If Dutch is like German, it would be shter (like stair, but with "sht" instead of "st"). If not, see Anon's answer. :)

No, you don't get the shp- and sht- pronunciations in Dutch. Sterre has the vowel in English , twice, so it's more or less ster-re. Each syllable gets an R sound! And although the first syllable has the main stress, both are emphasised, more than would be the case in English.And Afrikaans is different again - don't get me on to that!
