So, you donate your favorite old dress with the hopes that it becomes someone else's favorite new dress.
Well what if, after you donate it, someone else buys it. But instead of it becoming their new favorite dress, they cut it up into pieces for a quilt or an art project or for use of the notions (buttons, zipper, trim, etc.) or whatever else. Would you still feel better about that than if someone who genuinely liked the dress, picked it out of a donation box and wore it as is??
