Subject: Buying Furniture

We're getting ready to close on a house and both of us have realized that we need furniture. We have a furniture fund and add to it each month, but it's still going to be expensive. I have some questions for people:

1) Did you buy new or used? What do you recommend?

2) Where did you buy from? Did you buy from a furniture store, Target, or someplace else? Where would you recommend going?

3) Did you buy furniture all at once - ie a set at furniture shop, or piecemeal? I'm thinking we're going piecemeal.

4) Garage Sales: A good idea, or a way to spend money more quickly?

The main things we need are a new bed (we just have a mattress and boxspring on the floor) and a decent size sofa. The rest can wait, at least for a bit. But I like to do my research ahead of time and figure out the best way to go about doing this.
