2. Words changing meaning is only natural. Gay used to mean happy, after all. However, using gay as an insult promotes homophobia. And if a word is being used to hurt other people, no matter how inadvertently, it shouldn't be used. I feel that most people who say "that's so gay!" don't realize the homophobic intentions behind their speech, but the effect it has on LGBTQ people's self esteem is monumental. Part of who they are is being considered stupid. Words hurt. With "gay" and "fag" being the top insults teens nowadays throw at each other, is it any surprise that the suicide rate of gay teens is significantly higher than that of straight teens? Sticks and stones may break bones, but words leave emotional scars.
