I'm excited to go through this thread later.
I made a mix CD recently... I'll try to only put a couple suggestions because I know if I put like 10 no one will listen to any of them. However, I don't know what's going on in the world, so I don't know if everyone knows these songs or not.
This is a song my friends listen to at every party. I really like it!
Dirty Projectors - About To Die
I like imagining it as a sort of trippy reaction to someone in a good situation, perhaps whom the singer is in love with, exclaiming "Oh my god I'm about to die" - artistic reaction to abused hyperbole
Umm my sister showed this to me (re dating someone from the 70s) and it's my favored angry-techno-cheerleader song of the moment
Icona Pop - I Love It
And then once I got back from China I found myself weepingly in love with america and therefore weepingly grateful to the folk movement of the early sixties or whatever for making some noncynical americana noises. The two songs i sing with my roommate's guitar whenever he's gone or whenever I can't contain myself are If I Had A Hammer and All You Fascists Bound To Lose.
I also really appreciate the commie vibe Guthrie gives out, since china is "communist" (actually the worst combination of capitalism and fascism possible, but) and all. There's something intensely satisfactory to me right now about the combination of Commie and Banjo of guthrie right now.
