I've been to one ceremony and it was for a second cousin's 10 year wedding anniversary. They had a story behind it though...they'd lost a two year old child to leukaemia and in the year of treatment (one parent ALWAYS needs to be at the hospital here legally for a child that young and only one parent can stay over night, one obviously still needed to work and look after their older child) and then the grief and mourning afterwards, their marriage fell apart. They didn't get divorced but they separated for awhile (maybe a year) and then they got back together and after a year of being back together it was their 10 year and they renewed their vows.

This was all when I was about 14 and it was nice and it was symbolic and hopeful. I think it gave them a sense of moving on and a new beginning. They've been married almost another 10 years now and seem happy.

In general, I think it is kind of unnecessary and a little cheesy but it might be a nice thing to do in private with your spouse and not make a big spectacle of it.
