1. I use both. My family has had one or two electric kettles for a while but I don't think they're as common in the US as they are in Canada (and other places, of course!). If I don't need much I'll usually put a measuring glass in the microwave. I know you're not supposed to, but I'll put my coffee mug in the microwave for a minute and a half or so for hot water for a cup of tea. If I need to boil a lot for noodles or something I'll put hot water on the stove in a pot.
I think people don't use kettles because making a pot of tea at a time isn't really a thing here. I make mine by the cup - usually the only time I have a kettle is either from a restaurant or when I'm at home and my mom steeps a kettle.
2. Actually don't remember. I've seen TV shows on Netflix and Hulu more recently than I've been to the theatre. I feel like I've been to the movies since this, but I know for sure I saw Perks of Being a Wallflower. Oh wait, I saw Bond after that. I would recommend both. I was either holding back tears or crying for the second half of Wallflower.
