This is one version of the name of Mr. Rochester's "adopted" daughter in Charlotte Bronte's classic novel "Jane Eyre". Adele, as Jane calls her, was the daughter of Celene Varens, a former French opera singer.
-- Pheadirean  4/15/2006
Actually the little foundling "adopted" by Mr Rochester in Jane Eyre was named Adele, as she was French. Mr Rochester and Jane call her Adela, the English version of her name.

Adela is a gorgeous name that manages to be simple but still interesting. It's dignified and feminine.

People who are named Adela can stir forth a multiple number of traits. The best and the worst. I once knew a girl named Adella (which is my preferred way of spelling it) and she was very knowledgeable, generous, humble and talented. She was also the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. But yet Adela sounds like it could be the name of a very prudent woman. Which ever it could be, I think Adella is a very nice name. =)

The name of the youngest daughter in Lorca's play La Casa de Bernarda Alba. In the play, she's very passionate and emotional--which eventually leads to her downfall. (*trying not to give away the ending entirely*)

I think it sounds beautiful but snobby. In Sweden "adel" means "nobility".

Besides its German origins (deriving from adal - noble) another supposition is that this name comes from ancient Greek, where "adelos" meant hidden, hard to comprehend, secretive.

Like others have mentioned, Adela is the youngest daughter in The House of Bernarda Alba, which is where I was first introduced to this name. I think it is very pretty!

I think this name sounds very natural and like it belongs to someone very strong but feminine, too.
