"Stan" could be a nickname, so it's definitely better than the other "Aedels". But it would still be difficult for a person to carry.

The 'Ð' is not a D. It is a letter called Eth and represents a 'th', 'f' or 'v' sound. Æðelstan is pronounced Athel-stan.
