Can also be spelled Afrika.-- Anonymous User 5/4/2006
If this name was used by African-Americans than how come there is no popularity in America and only pouplarity in Spain? If you do like this name I'd say it sounds better as a middle name because it sounds like it has significance.-- Koolgal 4/2/2007
A famous bearer is Africa Kmoendts, pronounced (moo-END-its). She isn't really known by that many people. She was some background singer for something.-- Anonymous User 4/9/2007
Surprisingly, this name, spelled Africa or Afrika, also has origins in Scotland, where it means "pleasant" in Gaelic. [noted -ed]-- elizabeth hamlet 4/12/2007
I think the owner of this site got Africa mixed up with Kenya. Kenya is more popular with Blacks than Africa.-- Anonymous User 5/29/2007
No. Just no.-- Anonymous User 7/18/2007
Naming children after countries, cities, towns, etc. usually ends up in tacky names. This name is no exception to the rule. Assuming that the parents and grandparents don't hail from Africa to begin with, it seems rather pointless to name the child after a country they have no connection with.-- slight night shiver 4/19/2008
Africa isn't a country. I do agree however that naming your child after this continent is tacky.-- vomiting 6/17/2009
The name Africa can also be taken from a title of the Virgin Mary, "Santa María de África." This could explain its popularity in Spain.-- Anonymous User 6/7/2008
Name a sibling Asia while you're at it.
...Just no.-- Kerules 4/7/2009
I cannot believe this is an Irish name! I seriously thought it came from anywhere but Ireland. The name Africa originated in Ireland?-- kool_babe14 5/26/2009
This is pathetic as a name.-- bananarama 7/6/2009
I actually really like this name. It sounds pretty, but I wouldn't use it, as Africa is associated with war and poverty, a reputation I really wouldn't want to "transfer" on a child. Plus, Africa wouldn't sound right on an Irish girl (like myself). Aifric would be a more natural choice for me, but Africa is a beautiful name for a girl with African heritage or a Catholic girl.-- Ailis 7/15/2009
This name is really tacky. It has too strong of association with the continent.-- number1212 8/27/2009

The Irish version of this name is Aifric.-- Sweetie lu freebush 7/9/2006
Ive also seen it spelled Affrica meaning 'pleasant, or pleasing personality'.-- classy 9/15/2006
How could Africa be an anglicisation of Aifric? I wonder what genius etymologist thought up that. The name Africa was obviously given in reference to the continent. I must stress that Africa is not an Irish name, though Aifric is.-- Anonymous User 7/15/2009
I wish people didn't imagine that etymologists "dream up" name origins out of their heads.
The name Africa was used in Ireland from at least the 11th century as a form of Aifric - there is no conceivable connection with the name of the continent.-- Betty Blue 7/22/2009
