Eithne is pronouced EN-ya, while Aithne is pronounced AHN-ya.

The word "Aithne" means "acquaintance" in Irish. My guess is that its use as a spelling of "Eithne" arose out of confusion of the two words on the part of people with only a nodding acquaintance with Irish.
