I'm an Alexandra but when I go to the doctors or the dentists the dumb receptionist can never seem to get it right. It's always Alexander or Alexandria! OMG please it's not that hard. I'm not a big fan of Alexandra, it sounds a bit too pompous for a girl (like Elizabeth or Desdemona or Victoria). I knew one Alexandra, she was always quiet, some way angry and really grey person. I ended up being called Alex for most of my life, and now and then I'd get "But that's a boy name!" from some rude fellow-child. I experimented with Allie, Lexi, Sandra, Sasha (the Russian nickname), etc. I eventually settled on Lex; it's short, modern, has a fair bit of attitude, and isn't as annoyingly cutesy as Lexi.
