Comments for ALEXANDRA:

Nothing special... A typical Greek name! ;)
-- Anonymous User  1/1/2005
It's been associated with prophetesses in legends, the way Cassandra is, although not so well known.
-- Anonymous User  1/13/2005
I really like this name. I imagine a blond-haired, blue-eyed child.
-- hennig  2/5/2005
A blue-eyed, fair-haired girl? Well, I'm usually not very fixed on the image of what the bearers of names look like, but I usually see an Alexandra as dark-haired (in the range from chocolate brown to raven black).
-- gaelruadh19  8/2/2006
The Polish form of "Aleksandra" is also "Ola".
-- ola  2/21/2005

My name ia Alexandra and I love my name because it just sounds cool. People think of blue-eyed and blonde-haired people when they see this name but I have short brown hair and brown eyes... Anyways I love my name.
-- dum brunette526  4/19/2005
My second name is "Sandra", the German short version of "Alexandra". As far as I have heard it is the feminine form of "the strong man" or "the man who strikes back" ("andros" = "man" and "alex..." = "strong/defensive").
-- Paganqueen  7/16/2005
My name is Alexandra and I love it. There are so many other nicknames you can get from it! Everyone calls me Ali. But i have friends that are also named Alexandra and they are called Alex, Lexi, Alexa, the list goes on and on! I love my name!
-- Anonymous User  7/18/2005
Alexandra is my name & I really love it. There are so many different nicknames that you can use. My friends just keep thinking up new ones, and there is so much history associated with it. People often think of an Alexandra with blonde hair and blue eyes, but I know many more brunettes! ;)
-- dancindiva03  8/4/2005
My name is Alexandra, and I've never liked my name. It always struck me as being prissy and overly long. Just my humble opinion, though.
-- Anonymous User  8/11/2005
There are 2 Princess Alexandras: the consort of King Edward VII, and the Danish-Hong Kong Princess Alexandra of today.
-- wiswina  8/16/2005

I love the name Alexandra. Well of course I do since it's my name. I've never met any other girls with that name. Plenty of Alexanders but no Alexandras so it makes me feel special.
-- blondey91  9/8/2005
It's my name and it's the best! It's long (who cares), it's special and it's a princess name.
-- Anonymous User  9/24/2005

I like the name Alexandra, also in the form of Alexandria. I think the combination name 'Victoria-Alexandra' is nice. It's is one of my favourite combination names. I like it to make combination names.

Alexandra is the queen's first middle name. Her full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor.
-- Anonymous User  12/1/2005
I have this name and I love it. The only thing I hate is that when I was born it was more like a "rule" to name your daughter like this. The consequences: I have 7 other colleagues in my class with this name.
-- alexandra  12/10/2005
My name is Alexandra, and I love how it can be shortened to so many things. People who I have known for a long time refuse to call me Alex, while other people don't know anyone named Alexandra because they know me as Alex. I don't mind either way. I like how I can be called Alexandra, Lexi, Alex, Alli, and a lot of other shorter versions of my name. Yes it's long, but I love it!
-- Anonymous User  12/17/2005
Alexandra "Ally" Barone was the name of Raymond and Debra's daughter and Madylin Sweeten's character in the very funny comedy "Everybody Loves Raymond" (1996-2005).
-- AndrewJKD  12/21/2005
I like this name very much, I don't know many people who have my same name so it makes me unique. Many people call me Ali, or Alex for short.
-- ALIPALI  1/14/2006
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor is the queen's full name. Alexandra sounds nice with Elizabeth, but it's very long. As for Mary, this is a short simple name and very common for old ladies.
-- Dogsy  1/16/2006
I personally love my middle, but I like to be called Alex instead. My first name is Meagan by the way and I think Alexandra/Alex goes very nicely with it!
-- dancing-n.a.k.e.d  1/29/2006
Etymology of the name Alexandra and Alexander from Ancient Greek means two things: a) the protector of man in battle and b) healer-high priestess. I am named Alexandra and was blessed to have an Ancient Greek literature teacher in the family which he made sure to provide with the meaning of my name. For Ancient Greeks the name holds future potential for the infant thus they made sure to provide with the appropiate one or name it under a name which was in favour of a specific God or Goddess in order to favour the child to his/her life. Alexander the Great was named by his mother Olympiada accordingly as not only she claimed that he was a "son" of Zeus but also as it was foretold he was to have a future full of military stuggle and dominance thus a name like that could come quite handy.
-- pukka  2/14/2006
Dutch pronunciation is ah-lex-AHN-drah. [noted -ed]
-- X-Mar  2/18/2006
My name is Alexandra Madeleine, I like the sound of it, the middle name is spelled the French way so it's pronounced Mad-el-len. I never imagined it for blonde hair though, I have reddish brown hair and green eyes, and I always thought that fit it.
-- Anonymous User  3/10/2006
This is a nice and elegant name, definitely one of my favorites. I think I might change my middle name to this.
-- Anonymous User  4/3/2006
Alexandra is a very pretty, strong name. I don't think I would like the nickname Alex, too masculine. Alexis is a pretty name though.
-- Anonymous User  4/25/2006
I'm planning on naming my daughter Pamela ALEXANDRA. I love the sound of it, especially in Spanish since I live in a Spanish speaking country. But anyway, this is one of my all time favourite girl names.

One of my best friends is named Alexandra and her middle name is Kyra. I love her name, she finds it too long and everyone calls her Alex which suits her better. She has long blond hair and green eyes and that is what I think when I think of the name Alexandra. I also have many friends with the middle name Alexandra, including myself Chantal Lise Alexandra.
-- chantal1994  7/25/2006
It's the meaning "defender of mankind" that attracts me. The pronunciation is great, too!

Princess Alexandra, Prince (Later King) Edward's wife.
-- bellaboo  9/13/2006
A really pretty name, I have a really nice friend called Alexandra, and we call her Alex or Ali. AWESOME CHOICE!
-- bellaboo  9/13/2006
Well my name is Alexandra and sometimes I wish I had another name but most of the time I love it. But can anyone think of a nickname besides Lex, Alex, Alexis, Alexa? It might be hard but if not, oh well.
-- ALEX.ANDRA  10/26/2006
We named on of our twin daughters Alexandra (12 months old now). We pronounce it Al-ex-AHN-dra and call her Alex. It is a beautiful and classic name and we loved it because it was like Elizabeth in that it will remain timeless, and has so many nicknames.
-- mom2evaalex  10/27/2006
My name is Alexandra. It's so long so I don't use it and didn't learn how to write it till I was like 7. Whenever a sub calls me by Alexandra everyone looks at me and laughs. At least they don't know my middle name.
-- Anonymous User  12/13/2006
One of my good friends is Alexandra. I like this name, but whenever I hear it, I think of a snotty person. And if you call her anything BUT Alexandra, be prepared for a thunderstorm!
-- indiana ann  12/27/2006
There's a character in one of the Agatha Christie's novels, named Alexandra. The novel is "Sparkling Cyanide" and the character is Lady Alexandra Farraday.
-- Milena  1/23/2007

Famous bearer: Deterctive Alexandra Eames, a character on the NBC show Law & Order: Criminal Intent, played by Kathryn Erbe.
-- Anonymous User  2/12/2007
Well I'm called Alexandra and I have brown hair and blue eyes and people say the name suits me pretty well! Most people call me Alex, Alexa, Ally or Lexie. My mum calls me lexielou though as my first and middle names are Alexandra Sophie Louise. I like my name sometimes but others it's so annoying because it's so long. It also gets annoying with the fact that the two nicknames most people call me by: Alex and Ally sound masculine. Does anyone else have any other nickname ideas?
-- Anonymous User  2/22/2007
Alexandra is my real name I suppose but I refuse to answer to it! My name is Alex and everyone calls me Alex. Thing is a boy in my class who was called Alexander all through primary school has decided to take my name! I was always called Alex and he wasn't, it's unfair!
-- Anonymous User  3/14/2007
In Russian, the nickname for Alexandra is Sasha. This is a nice alternative to Ally/Alex (though I do like Lexy).
-- Anonymous User  4/1/2007
There are at least three Alexandras in my grade! I think this name is getting very common and maybe a bit overused! It is still a pretty name, though. I especially like the nicknames "Alex" and "Allie". Not a big fan of Lexie, though.
-- CharlieRob  5/5/2007
Salome Alexandra is the name of the last monarch to die as queen of Judea before it fell to Rome.
-- ElizainEngland  6/23/2007
Nice name, although the most popular short name is Alex which is a guys name too, which is bad. Very BAD! But if you're Lexi, Allie, Lex, or another short form, that's okay.
P.S. How about Andy from the andra sound or Andra itself?
-- spaz123  6/29/2007
I adore this full name and the nickname Alexa. Alex sounds masculine and Alexis sounds feminie.
-- Emma McHnery  7/13/2007
I'm an Alexandra but when I go to the doctors or the dentists the dumb receptionist can never seem to get it right. It's always Alexander or Alexandria! OMG please it's not that hard. It just plain Alexandra, come on it's a pretty common name and do I really look like a boy? Anyone else have this problem?
-- Anonymous User  7/18/2007
I'm not a big fan of Alexandra, it sounds a bit too pompous for a girl (like Elizabeth or Desdemona or Victoria). I knew one Alexandra, she was always quiet, some way angry and really grey person. The name sounded like caricature on this girl. Alexander is much more balanced in my option.
-- ToveTer  7/30/2007
I picture Alexandra as a Hispanic girl with gorgeous black hair and medium skin. If I have a daughter I might name her Alexandra. I like Alex as a nickname.
-- deatheater1408  8/5/2007
My name is Alexandra but I have always gone by Xany. Xandra when I was a baby sometimes Xan. Only problem is most times people can't pronounce it and say Zany. It's a little more orginal nickname than Alex, Ali/Aly, Allie.
-- Anonymous User  8/13/2007
Alexandra was the name of the last Empress of Russia. She was given the name Alix at birth but changed it to Alexandra upon her marriage to Nicholas II. She was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Her husband was forced to abdicate during World War I and sixteen months later they were both murdered by Bolsheviks along with all five of their children. She was a very beautiful woman and this is a very beautiful name, which deserves to be frequently used, in spite of the Empress' tragic history.
-- queenv  9/25/2007
Snooty name. Snobbish New York liberals and similar types of people like to give their daughters this name.
-- johann14  9/25/2007
I chose this name for my daughter in '04. I think it's a beautiful name! I lived up North at the time, and I had heard of a very few "Alexandra's," but since moving South I have hardly heard a peep of the name. I don't think it's all that common of a name; that is why I had chosen it to begin with! I wanted a unique name that wasn't un-heard of, but not odd, either. I think it's regal. Absolutely classy!
-- Anonymous User  10/3/2007
Also found under the form Alechsandra in Judeo-Spanish.
-- Anonymous User  11/22/2007
Alexandra is my name. Here are a few things to think about.

Reactions from others:
Throughout my life, many have said, "What a pretty name" when I introduce myself. However, several kids in elementary school thought it sounded prissy.

Nicknames:
I ended up being called Alex for most of my life, and now and then I'd get "But that's a boy name!" from some rude fellow-child. I experimented with Allie, Lexi, Sandra, Sasha (the Russian nickname), etc. I eventually settled on Lex; it's short, modern, has a fair bit of attitude, and isn't as annoyingly cutesy as Lexi. Alexandra *does* have nicknames for most anyone.
-- 1066  12/2/2007
This name is of Greek origin. It is a feminine longer form of the Greek name Alekos. It means defender or helper of mankind.
-- gammagirl  1/28/2008
I used to prefer to spell it Alexandria, but then I met a girl named Alexandra, and since she has become one of my best friends, I like to spell it the way she spells it now. A helpful thing about this name is that it has a lot of different pet forms (Alex, Andra, Zandra, Lexi, etc.)
-- Pippin  4/19/2008
The name Alex sounds very young, so a better nickname for a an old lady with this name would be Sandra.
-- Hushpuppy  5/10/2008
Famous bearers:
Writer Alexandra Berková
Actress Alexandra Dahlström
Actress Alexandra Neldel
Actress/model Alexandra Kamp
Actress Alexandra Paul
Actors Otto Šimánek and Hermína Jarešová have a daughter Alexandra
-- Emilie007  5/30/2008
One of my best friends' name is Alexandra. She goes by Alex, and that is much better for her! When a sub calls her Alexandra, people look at her and sort of chuckle! I hate how it's mis-pronounced as Alexander! I don't picture a blonde haired, blue eyed person with the name Alexandra.
-- Elizabeth A.  6/9/2008
Alexandra is nice with the nickname Sandy or Sandra.
-- Anonymous User  6/10/2008
Also used in France. Since "Alexandrie" is the French name for the town Alexandria, French people use more "Alexandra" than "Alexandrie" for little girls.
-- Marie-Amelie  6/19/2008
I really like this name, because of all the nicknames you can garner from it. It gives the child herself some choice in what she wants to be called, which I feel is an important part of the naming process that people tend to forget.
-- wishenough  7/19/2008
The name Alexandra used to be what I wanted to name my daughter. Then I would most likely shorten it to Alex. It is a beautiful name! There are all kinds of things a girl could go by if this was her name.
One of my best friends names is Alexandra, she goes by Alex. Now I would always think of her if I named my daughter this. So I will not do it.
-- Jeremiah2911  8/16/2008
Alexandra is my first name and I've always thought it was a bit plain because I know so many other Alexandras. I always feel that it's proper to pronounce it Ah-lex-an-dra, but being from South Jersey I have trouble pronouncing things and say it Ah-le-zan-dra. I honestly have trouble pronouncing it the other way. Also, it makes me very angry when people say Alexandria because there is no 'i' in my name.
-- alexblake  11/8/2008
Rugby player Joe Montana and Jennifer Wallace have a daughter Alexandra Montana (born 10 October 1985).
-- Emilie007  11/17/2008
I think it's okay, and I know a couple Alexandras. One goes by Alex another goes by Ally. Ally's parents sometimes call her Xandy (zandy) which I think is cute and unique, but not something to go by in the general public.
-- margs66  12/14/2008
One of my favourite names, always been one of my favourites. My favourite spelling is Alexandra, but Alexzandra is nice too, or Aleczandra. I don't like the spellings Alecsandra or Alixandra.
-- emmiix3  1/18/2009
Czech, Polish and Slovak pronunciation is "ah-lek-SAHN-drah".
-- MaggieSimpson  2/15/2009
I have a Greek husband, we live in Greece and we named our second daughter Alexandra. It is a very popular and classical name here and pronounced 'alek-SAN-dra'. Our other daughter's name is Athina and we think both of them have classy, mythological Greek names that are quite international, in a sense that these names are well known in English and French speaking countries too. I hope that my girls are going to like their names!
-- panni  2/25/2009
I have to say, I love this name. It's so strong, and I love the meaning and mythology behind it. Alex is my favorite nickname, because it's so simple but expressive.
-- magicalhannah7  2/27/2009
My name is Alexandra, and when I was younger I didn't like it, but now I do. I just think it's a pretty name, and who cares if it's long? It has many options for nicknames, and most people call me Ally. Some of my friends call me Alexandra, and one calls me Xandra sometimes. I don't like to be called Alex, but some people do anyway. Also, I'm probably the only person with this nickname, but my closest friends call me RaRa (get it? AlexandRA).
-- permanentrose  2/28/2009
My younger sister is named Alexandra, and she went by Alex until she was three, when she insisted on being Zandry. She isn't anything BUT a Zandry. We call her just Zan a lot. When she was a baby everybody kept thinking her name was Alexandria, with an I. Also, everybody tries to spell Zandry "Xandria". Oh well. I LOVE the name Alexandra, I wish Zandry would go by the longer version, it's absolutely GORGEOUS, who cares if it's long.
-- baileymarissa  4/9/2009
Someone close to me, she thinks of her name as regal.
-- Anonymous User  4/9/2009
Ok, I changed my mind about the name "Alex" for a nickname for Alexandra. Alex is more for a boy NOT a girl. A great nickname for Alexandra is Alexa! NOT Alex.
-- deatheater1408  4/30/2009
I have a friend named Alexandra- she uses "Alex" as a nickname. Personally, I think the name is quite overused, as well as the nickname Alex. But, I do like the name Alexandra.
-- JillianNora  6/17/2009
I really like the name Alexandra and some of the nicknames that can be derived from it. I agree that Alex is too masculine. My friend has her name shortened to Lexy and sometimes Alexy since she doesn't like the length of it. I much prefer the nickname Alexi. Some people say they see a blonde blue eyed girl, but I see more of a dark brown green or brown eyed girl.
-- Anonymous User  8/1/2009
I do like this name. It's quite pretty.
-- bananarama  8/11/2009
Actor Raoul Schránil and 'furriery' model Růžena Havelková have a daughter Alexandra Schránilová, born 1940.
-- MaggieSimpson  9/20/2009
I used to love this name, but now I don't. I mean it's gotten WAY too common, there is like a million Alexandras (every single one is now "Alex or Lexi").
-- italiannames  10/7/2009
I think Alexandra has a certain grandeur to it but I think the name is too popular to be used. Even its variants are used too much (Alexander, Alexi, Lexi) and there are too many nicknames. No offense too anyone but I don't like nick names. I prefer being called by your given name.
