Is it pronounced a-lin-a? That sounds nice.
-- princeton-girl18  7/4/2006
This is such a beautiful name. Pronunciation seems varied, I only know of it pronounced a-LEAN-a.

It's a very pretty name.

I pronounce it ah-LEE-nah. I plan on using it on one of my future daughters.

Alina is one of the unusual and not common names in Russia as well. There are two pronunciations of this name one is with AH-lina and another is with first "a" pronounced as in Adam or Evan. And of course there is a famous and very old Russian name Alena with "E" in it pronounced as in YOrk.
To me it sounds very gentle and beautiful, a light heared fear skin princess?!

My best friend spells her name Aleena, but that variant is not on this site. She was born in Pakistan, but she says that most people there with her name spell it Alina. I think both ways are very beautiful, but I prefer Aleena to Alina.

Means "bright, beautiful".

My name is Alina. I always thought of it as quite boring but after realising it means noble I'm quite pleased! I never actually knew the origin either. I had lots of people say it was Greek, Russian, Spanish, etc! Nice to know that after being called a name for 17 years!
-- alina-marie  11/22/2005
Alina is of Polish origin and means Bright and Beautiful.

My name is Alina and I'm proud having it. In my country (ROMANIA) it is becoming day by day more popular and that makes me feel very happy because it is a beautiful and powerful name.

My name is Alina and I am from Romania, I came here when I was 7 and I had never met or heard of another person named the same. It is nice to know there are a few out there with such a special name.

My name is Alina and I am from America. My parents found the name in a baby book and I am so pleased to learn of its popularity, growing up I hated that no one had my name. I was born in 1976 and it wasn't as common then.
-- alinam0676  6/29/2006
Also spelled Alena, Aleena, Allena and Aline. I love this name, so very beautiful and sophisticated and not a fad name.

German pronunciation: aw-LEE-nah. [noted -ed]
Quite popular in Germany, considered young and modern. Love this name!

In Romania, the verb "alina" means to soothe, to confort or to make the emotional pain, such as missing a person, bearable, like a painkiller:). My mother named me after this. It's a popular name in Romania and nobody thinks of it as noble.

Romanian pronunciation I think is ah-lin-nah.

Also a girls name in Slovenia.
-- earthnut  7/3/2007
The name is also Romanian and just to let you know it's my girl cousin's name too :D. It's a very girly sort of name and very city like if you get what I mean.
-- catalina_x  10/12/2007
I don't like "Al" as a nickname for a girl. And I don't fancy "Lina" either. My name is Leanne and I've gotten "lean" all my life. "Elaina" or "Elanya" are both prettier sounding and looking than "Alina".
-- leananshae  12/19/2007
This is SUCH a pretty name, and judging by the other comments, it has beautiful meanings in other languages. This name never caught on in Finland despite the popularity of the name Elina. I personally think Alina sounds nicer, and in Finnish, the first syllable is always stressed, so you can actually tell the difference, which you could hardly do in English. Whether you put the stress on the first or second syllable, it's a lovely name.

Here in Finland, I haven't heard a single bad word about it. Most people love it! It's not common, that makes it special. Girls can easily use it as a first name, or second first name. Here I don't know anyone else named Alina, in Russia, I know one. It's easy to spell too! I love it! I feel lucky to have it. -Owner of name
