Famous bearer: Ambrose Powell "A. P." Hill, Confederate Civil War general.-- johnnyreb 2/1/2007
I prefer Ambrosia, (which I normally heard in the myths) for the nector (or sometimes food) of immortality and a name. I guess it's just because when I imagine what it's supposed to look like, it's always the classic nymph-like demi-goddesses on Olympus, serving the gods with goblets or fruit (or whatever the food/drink is), and since the servers are almost always women, I just associate it as a feminine name. A very beautiful one too, but Ambrose is a good name too.-- Irish Pearl 2/24/2007

Ambrose sounds almost mythical to me ... "Immortal."-- aeristella 1/18/2008
This name has always sounded feminine to me. It sounds like a combination of Amber and Rose, and the -rose ending makes the name sound feminine in the same way that Primrose is feminine. Well, I wouldn't use this old-fashioned male name on my daughter, especially because of the type of people who have had it, apart from maybe Ambrose Bierce.-- slight night shiver 5/15/2008

Ambrose Burnside (May 23, 1824 – September 13, 1881) was a Union General in the Civil War. The facial hair known as 'sideburns' was named for him.-- unexpectedsandwiches 12/5/2008
Even given the sideburns association, I like this name. It's very classic and not overly masculine, but I don't find it feminine either. Good middle name if paired with something a little more modern, but could also work as a first name.-- unexpectedsandwiches 12/5/2008
Ambrose is a character in Daphne du Maurier's novel, My Cousin Rachel.-- Anonymous User 12/25/2008
I prefer the much older form "Ambrosius," which, incidentally, is a much more beautiful name than "Ambrose."-- Anthroponomastics 5/28/2009
This is an underused name that is, however, growing in popularity with the more trend-setting baby-namers. Uncommon enough for many people to have not make a connection to it with religion, fortunately.-- vomiting 5/29/2009
Ambrose is a character in Willa Cather's "My Ántonia".-- Nisha 9/26/2009
