Comments for ANJA:
It is pronounced as UNN-yah.-- Ylva 1/11/2006
Anja is a Russian female name meaning GRACE OF GOD. The nickname or pet name is Anjuschka.-- elffire 4/6/2006
I sometimes call my younger sister, Anna, "Anja". She hates it, but I love saying it!-- Pheadirean 6/4/2006
I know a girl called Anja. We pronounce it AN-yah (Norwegian).-- Anonymous User 8/24/2006

Famous bearer is Anja Pärson, a Swedish skier.-- someone006 10/21/2006
I love this name. But, I would rather pronounce it like it is spelled. (AN-JUH) Wouldn't you?-- Taydbug112 12/7/2006
I love the way that this name looks and sounds; "AHN-yah" just rolls off of the tongue beautifully.
That may be how "j" is pronounced in English, but not in the Germanic and Slavic langages (damn the lack of rules in English pronunciation). "AHN-jah", I'm sorry, but that just throws it away.-- gaelruadh19 1/19/2007
I think this name is gorgeous, especially with the Scandinavian j in it. I'm not sure what about that appeals to me, but I think it makes it look wonderful.
And: You must remember, Taydbug112, that the entire world does not abide by the rules of your language English. In the languages that this name originates in, the j makes the "y" sound and it is perfectly correct.-- CamilleTheGreat 6/3/2007
I think it sounds a lot better with the "J" pronounced as a "Y", the way it's supposed to.-- rain-angel03 12/21/2006
It's also quite common in Poland.-- Anonymous User 12/2/2007
Perhaps not so famous a bearer is one of my favourite models, Anja Rubik, who was born in Poland in 1985. Stunning name, and I agree: I much prefer the name pronounced with a Y.-- foolsinlove 12/29/2007
I love this name, I hear it's quite popular in Germany, so I wonder how come it's not listed as also being a German name on BtN. [noted -ed]-- anjastt9 2/15/2009
Ah-yah is correct. If you want to pronounce it ah-jah then spell it an?a.-- Anonymous User 8/27/2009
