In Armenian it means brave, and it is also a masculine name.

In the movie "Rigoletto," Ari is the name of the main character. Great movie!

I have a close friend named Ari. He is a bit of an original, you could say. He's quite nerdy and has extremely long hair. I think my impression of the name has been imprinted forever.

The name Ari has a detestable nickname in elementary and middle school, 'Air'.
-- stormy_lovegood  3/6/2007
What's so "detestable" about the word "AIR"?
-- Anonymous User  11/3/2007
Actually, I don't even think it's pronounced Air-ee. The two people I saw with it were AR-ee. I knew one in elementary school, but I think he moved. The next year, a substitute teacher was taking attendence and called out, Ari, prounouncing it Air-ee. He said his name was AR-ee, but when I got to match people's names and faces, I saw that this was someone else.

I also knew a girl, Ariana, who went by Ari. I think it's a gorgeous name that works equally well for both sexes.

I like this name a lot for a girl or guy, but a guy moreso.

I actually love this as a girl's name, although it's very cute on other people's boys. Just too feminine-sounding for my taste.

Hearing, "I'm Ari Shapiro" every morning on NPR kind of makes the name grow on you.

Another bearer, though fictional, is Ari Ruka of Okage: Shadow King. The game is a spoof of Japanese role-playing games.

Ari Batchelder (not sure I spelled that right) is a character in the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. He is an eraser, which means he can turn into a wolf at will, kinda like the Twilight shapeshifters.

It's a decidedly more masculine to use Ari instead of Ariel. While I really like both, Ariel is much more feminine in my eyes. Ari's a really strong name for a boy that he'll be able to grow up with. I like it.
-- magicalhannah7  3/7/2009
I actually really love this name-- the only reason why I wouldn't consider it as a name, if I ever had a son, is because the only Ari I know is the freakiest young man I've ever seen in my life. Otherwise, it's a really unique sounding name-- it's a cute nickname for Ariel, too.
