Comments for BARTHOLOMEW:

Bartholomew! There's is this one cartoon about a dog who hated wheels. It's sooooo cute and hilarious and this name reminds me of that dog. Though, I wouldn't name my child this, I still think it's cute!

I had a boyfriend once with the last name of Bartholomew. Because my mom didn't like him much, she would pronounce it (though not to his face) "barf-on-you." I've never been able to get past that and like the name again.

What a mouthful! Can you imagine a five- or six-year-old trying to learn how to spell this name? Plus he might get the nickname Bart, which sounds horrible. If you wish to give your son a rare name, find something other than Bartholomew.

I think Tolly is a very cute nickname for this - much better than Bart.

Bartholomaios is an ancient greek name which comes from the Aramaic word 'bar', which means 'son' and from the Greek name 'Ptolemaios, altered to somewhat 'Tolemeos'.

PS. Ptolemaios is a Greek name which means the one who is related to 'p(t)olis' (=city). Moreover, it can mean the one who fights for cities, or makes war. 'War' in ancient Greek is 'p(t)olemos'. In modern Greek is 'polemos'. In either case, you can see that wars were about (capturing) cities.

I personally dislike it; however, I am starting to warm up to it mostly because it is one of those names that nobody would ever attempt to change into a girl's name. Which is a positive because it is so RARE to find a guy's name that those people who has an obsession with turning boys' names into girls' names will never be turned into a girl's name.

LOL! I always thought this name was pronounced: Barth-oh-loh-MEW.
-- JungKyungSoon  10/16/2007
Horrible on a boy/girl. But cute for a cat! I think this is a name for a cat because it has "mew" on the end and mew can be a nickname.

People who happen to share the negative traits of being both religious nuts AND pretentious would go for this ugly, long, foreign-sounding name that will be shortened to Bart, which sounds like fart.

I think this name is cute and I would use it for a middle name.
-- moonbaby9307  6/9/2008
I always liked the sound of this name but I hate the nickname Bart. Plus its really long. It might make a good name for a cat.
